Dr. Scholl’s Insoles are like canned OJ

I heard a fellow podiatrist compare Dr. Scholl’s insoles to canned orange juice once, and I couldn’t agree more. Dr. Scholl’s insoles, which you can buy at just about any Wal-Mart, drug or grocery store, used to serve a purpose. People’s feet hurt and they needed some extra cushioning. But today, these products are a waste of your money.

There have been so many improvements in the technology, materials and manufacturing process used to make insoles that you can get much better and more effective products today. Not to mention the fact that we know a lot more about the type of support our feet need, and the very different types of support required to treat different foot conditions. The generic one-size-fits-all-needs insole is just a waste of money. In fact, it’s even a waste of the gas it took to get to the store to purchase them.

So what does this have to do with canned orange juice? Well, cans used to be the only way to safely package, ship and store orange juice. Unless you lived near an orange grove, it was your only option.  We just had to deal with the fact that it tasted nasty and tinny.

But now you can get a much better-tasting and fresher orange juice out of a carton or bottle at any grocery or convenience store. The technology has changed so much over the years that there’s no need for canned OJ today. If you think about it, it’s kind of amazing the OJ canners are still in business. The product has become a dinosaur destined for extinction.

If all you need is a little extra cushioning in your shoes, skip the Dr. Scholl’s and try out one of the brands they sell at the better sporting goods stores like Dick’s. Superfeet, Spenco and SofSole all provide more cushioning and will last longer.  We also sell several of the top brands of insoles on our website and in the office, which are far superior to what you’ll buy even at Dick’s.
