Of course, nobody wants to have toenail fungus. Whether discolored, abnormally thick or cracked, fungus can do a number on your toenails…but I’m ok, you’re ok—it’s super common!
Call us if you even suspect a fungal infection, no matter how slight. Because the sooner we cure it, the better! It’s best to take action before the fungi spreads to other parts of your body, or permanent damage is caused.
And don’t be hesitant—we have seen…it…all. (Uh, have you watched our YouTube channel???) And we’re proud to be among the first podiatrists in Kentucky to use laser therapy for treating toenail fungus.
How does toenail fungus develop?
The way toenail fungus develops depends on its environment, but most types thrive in dark, moist environments. (If you’re squeamish about the word “moist,” you really shouldn’t be reading our blog.)
So, if you’re someone who spends lots of time at pools, gyms, sweats excessively or wears tight, moisture-trapping shoes…you have a high chance of encountering these delightful little spore-heads. (Insult, not a medical term.)
These infections can also result from a pedicure if tools aren’t properly sterilized. So go ahead and side-eyeball that pedicurist when she is pulling out her tools. Make sure she’s (or he’s) “keeping it clean,” in a clean environment. Or better yet, using professionally sterilized tools to minimize risk to you!
How will i recognize it?
So how do you know if you have fungus on YOUR toenails?! Symptoms are easy to recognize—look for discoloration or spots, crumbling edges or thick, brittle texture. Check and care for your feet daily. They’re super important parts of your body. Nails and all.
Toenail fungus can take many forms – if you are concerned about your own toes, call us!
what are the available treatment options?
Treatment methods depend on the severity of the infection.
They can range from a simple anti-fungal medication to laser treatments.
We also offer topical medications or lacquers that are easy to apply.
Only in very persistent and extreme cases, do we need to remove the nail and start fresh…but only as a very last resort! (Plus, patients feel no pain with this procedure. It’s not as bad as it sounds.)
Lasers? Tell me more.
Our HyperBlue Laser is FDA-approved and also treats other causes of “dystrophic toenails,” like trauma or auto-immune disorders affecting the toes.
The treatment itself is quick, painless and has no harmful side effects.
However, it isn’t for everyone—which is why we will properly evaluate your condition to determine if it’s best for you. Trust us, we’re doctors.
