Swollen, puffy feet + ankles can happen all year round, but an uptick is noticed during the summer due to increased activities and the heat. What causes swelling?

 

Summer swelling, also known as edema, is caused by excessive fluid build up in the feet and ankles. A few different things can lead to this, like hot weather, prolonged standing + sitting, and even certain medications. It's important to address swelling early on. How Can You Treat It?

Elevate Your Feet

When you're sitting or lying down, try to elevate your feet above the level of your heart. This can help reduce swelling by allowing excess fluid to drain away from your feet and ankles. 

Stay Hydrated!

Hydration is essential for beating the heat, can also helps with swelling! Drinking plenty of water can help prevent swelling by keeping your body well-hydrated. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to help flush out toxins and reduce water retention. 

Wear Sompression Socks

Prolonged sitting or standing (like watching a baseball game or waiting in line at an amusement park) can increase your risk of swelling. Compression socks can help improve circulation in your feet + ankles, which can help reduce swelling. They come in a variety of styles and colors, so you can find a pair that suits your style!

Avoid Salty Foods

We know, they’re everywhere - especially during summer months! Foods high in salt can contribute to water retention, so try to limit your intake of salty snacks + processed foods. Instead, opt for fruits + vegetables that are rich in nutrients, low in sodium, and can be chilled to help beat the heat!
