Tips For Your Fall Shoe Picks

As the weather begins to cool down and the leaves start to change, it's only right that your shoe choices change too! For your safety and comfort, it's essential to make sure your shoe selection accommodates the new season. At Lexington Podiatry, we want to see you happy and healthy all year round - so it's only right that we share our Podiatrist approved shoe tips for fall.

1. It's Time for Closed Toe Shoes

As much as we enjoy the warm sunshine on our toes, it's time to say goodbye to sandals and hello to closed toe shoes like sneakers and boots. Closed toe shoes give us an extra layer of protection from cool temperatures and any potential debris on the ground.

2. Choose Supportive Shoes

At Lexington Podiatry, we stress the importance of arch support all year round, Fall is the perfect time of year to invest in shoes with proper arch support and cushioning for seasonal activities, long walks and hiking. When shopping for your fall picks, look for shoes with ample padding in the sole and good ankle stability to avoid strain or discomfort.

3. Make Sure They're Weather Resistant

With the potential for rain and dropping temps, it's important to have a weather-resistant option in your lineup for the fall. Waterproof boots and shoes with traction can help prevent slips and falls, especially in wet conditions.

Keep In Mind

During the fall months, it's common for conditions like ankle sprains, discomfort from plantar fasciitis, and even foot fungus to increase. We see ankle sprains more frequently due to fall activities like hiking and outdoor sports. That's why it's crucial to wear supportive shoes and stretch properly before participating in any physical activities!

A common cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis, can also flare up during the transition to fall shoes if they lack proper arch support. If you're dealing with this condition, it's essential to select shoes with adequate arch support or invest in orthotic inserts to avoid aggravation.

With the changing weather, it's important to keep in mind that fungal infections can thrive in damp, dark environments. Keeping your feet clean + dry, changing your socks regularly, wearing breathable shoes, and properly drying your shoes after stepping in any puddles can help you avoid fungal infections like athlete's foot.
