Are you missing the spring in your step this season? If so, don’t worry. We’ll help you put your best foot forward.
Now that spring weather is ramping up, many of you will be getting out and getting active. With all of this new physical activity, have you taken the time to see how your feet are doing?
If you’re experiencing foot pain, do not ignore it! Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong, so pay attention!
Here are some common foot ailments that you should know about:
- Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of your plantar fascia, the strong ligament that connects your heel bone to your toes. This ligament helps support the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber. When this becomes inflamed it can cause severe pain and disability
- Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a condition where the muscles and ligaments surrounding the toe joint are out of alignment, causing the toe to become stuck in a bent, or “hammered” position. These can cause pain, which may be aggravated by shoe gear.
- Bunions
A bunion is a result of a malalignment of the two bones that form the big toe joint, causing a painful and large bump on the side of your toe. Inadequate shoe gear may worsen a bunion deformity.
- Metatarsalgia
The metatarsals are a group of five long bones located in the middle of your foot. Metatarsalgia is when the head of one of the bones lies at a lower level than the surrounding metatarsals, and protrudes from the bottom of the foot. It can be caused by a faulty foot structure or a fracture that didn’t heal correctly. It’s also known as ball of foot pain.
- Misaligned Feet
When your ankle rolls inward to absorb the shock from walking and running, it’s called pronation. This is a natural function of your foot; however, when your ankle excessively rolls inward and your foot turns outward it’s called overpronation or hyperpronation. Overpronation is a common cause of foot, ankle, and even knee pain.
It is important to remember that if not addressed, all of these problems will only continue to get worse over time.
