Summertime Means Bathing Suits, Flip Flops and…Heel Pain?
It’s everyone’s favorite time of year. The sun is shining, pools are open, and people are breaking out their favorite pair of sandals. Flip flops and other sandals are perfect when lounging by the pool with a drink in hand, but if worn as an everyday shoe, sandals can bring your summertime fun to a screeching halt.
Flip flops and other types of sandals are not ideal for activities that require you to be on your feet for long periods of time. This is because sandals do not provide your feet with proper support. Most sandals are very flat and flexible which can exacerbate any underlying issues or cause new ones.
Wearing non-supportive and flexible shoes can irritate the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that stretching from your heel to your toes. When the plantar fascia is inflamed, it causes excruciating heel pain known as plantar fasciitis. We see a lot of patients with this during summer and there is nothing worse than a case of plantar fasciitis to ruin your summer vacation plans. Most people need an injection of steroid to the area (ouch!) and must wear an immobilizing boot for up to 4 weeks to resolve their heel pain. This requires you to stay off your feet as much as possible and can really put a damper on your summer plans.
We do not want this to be how you spend your summer vacation! To avoid causing heel pain this summer, you can visit our YouTube channel here and watch our shoe review videos to learn how to pick out the best shoes for all occasions.
If you are reading this too late and have already inadvertently caused some heel pain, never fear! At Lexington Podiatry, we offer the latest treatment technology including laser therapy. You may have already heard of our laser to treat toenail fungus, but we offer laser therapy for pain too!
Laser therapy for pain relief is fast and painless. The laser uses concentrated light energy in direct contact with the skin to stimulate your body’s healing factors, which results in accelerated healing to the targeted area. Most people experience a 40% reduction in pain within 10 days. Choosing laser therapy also means that you can potentially avoid an injection (nobody likes needles) and wearing a boot for 4 weeks.
That’s right! You don’t have to put your summer plans on hold because of heel pain. We can get you back on your feet and enjoying your summer vacation in record time.
