Podiatrist Spring Break Survival Guide

Winter is finally coming to a close and spring break is just around the corner. By far, the most popular spring break spot is Florida. If you are looking forward to sand, sun and surfing this year, check out these tips to make the most out of your spring break trip this year.

1. Wear Appropriate Shoes

One of the best travel tips I can give you is to wear the appropriate shoes. If you are flying to your destination, wearing the proper shoe gear is essential. So, what shoes should you wear at the airport?

The answer is simple: tennis shoes.

Walking through the airport is the least fun part of your spring break trip. The impact your feet feel walking on that concrete can ruin your vacation before it begins. To ensure that foot pain doesn’t ruin spring break, make sure you wear supportive tennis shoes during this high-impact time and protect your feet from injury. Brooks, Asics, Hoka and New Balance are all great, supportive tennis shoes for any high-impact activity, such as walking through the airport.

2. Wear Compression Socks

I know what you’re thinking and no, compression socks are not just for elderly people with circulation issues. When you fly, it increases leg swelling and therefore decreases circulation. The decrease in circulation increases your risk of a blood clot, which can be fatal. Wearing compression hose will improve your circulation and work to prevent the development of a blood clot. You can pick up a pair of compression socks at our office or you can order some on Amazon.

It is also good to get up every hour during the flight and stretch your legs. This will also help improve your circulation and prevent any leg cramps.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water while you are on the plane and once you have reached your destination! This is especially important if your spring break destination is somewhere like Florida. Staying hydrated is not only good for your overall health, but is also great for your foot health. Staying well hydrated will prevent foot and leg cramps that can really put a cramp in your vacation. Hydration tablets are a great way to replace electrolytes and stay hydrated.

4. Protect Your Skin

I know there is a lot of talk about how important sunscreen is, but it is worth mentioning again here. People want to come back from spring break tan and sun-kissed, but at what cost? Sunscreen will protect you from developing melanoma and yes, you can get melanoma on your feet or even under your nails. So be sure to protect your skin from the UV rays and shop for sunscreen on Amazon.

Another way you can keep you skin healthy is by using moisturizer daily. The combination of the heat with the sea water or chlorine water will leave you skin dry and cracked. If your skin becomes too dry and cracked, it can lead to fissures. To prevent this, make sure to moisturize daily. I recommend Mod Pod Nourish. 5. Relax
