Pain in the ball of your foot can have several different underlying causes.
By getting in for an appointment sooner than later, we can help you get to the root of the issue.
It's important not to ignore foot pain because it can often lead to knee, hip and back pain when our bodies overcompensate for the injury over time.
Different Types of Ball of Foot Pain
Tell me if this story sounds familiar!
A new patient, ‘Karen’, explained to me that she has had ball of foot pain for OVER ten years. TEN!! The only thing that seemed to help her feel better was getting her weight completely off of it.
Here’s the problem. She HAD to be on her feet all day because she was a teacher. I know that for a lot of my patients, being off your feet is not a long term option.
This particular patient was at the end of her rope…
Karen had already gone to four other doctors (including Podiatrists and Orthopedic Surgeons), purchased three different pairs of orthotics, had multiple steroid injections, been in a CAM walker boot for more months than she could remember, and finally been in a cast for a couple of months.
So, you can imagine, she was less than enthusiastic when I suggested a custom orthotic with a different design and features built in to offload the ball of the foot. Ta-Da! The ‘weight’ would be completely off the pain in the ball of the foot.
Well, less than enthusiastic is playing it down.
She was sad, defeated and upset with me that her best option was ANOTHER set of custom orthotics. I get it. Why should she believe me? She’d already tried 3 custom orthotics and tons of different insoles and gadgets from various stores with no pain relief.
Here’s where her experience with us was different.
After a detailed history, physical exam and gait analysis, Karen and I worked TOGETHER to discuss previous materials and features that were unsuccessful in the past. Her lifestyle played a big role in the shape and materials of her new orthotics. We designed a truly custom orthotic around her biomechanical abnormalities she’s had her whole life. Our process is a truly custom process and the difference between a custom orthotic and an insole or “orthotic” you get from Walmart, Costco or other stores that claim the same.
Fast forward to three weeks later…
Karen was performing a gait analysis while trying on her new orthotics, fresh from the lab. As she was walking around the office, she made the comment “This is the first time I haven’t had pain in that area in ten years!” and she broke down in tears.
That’s why we do it, folks. We have patients that travel across the state for a truly ‘custom’ experience, so we don’t take your trust lightly. We know we can get you there and we’re confident in the process.
