Living with Neuropathy

Most patients that deal with chronic nerve damage have exhausted most traditional medications, physical therapy and purchased just about every lotion and potion available on the market. Many of our patients are already at a high risk for falling. However, medicating those patients with a strong drug, such as Neurontin or Gabapentin causes worsening stability while walking.

We’ve found that they lack confidence just simply going to the grocery store. They find themselves sitting most of the time because they’re scared they’re going to fall. Concerned family members often accompany them to their appointments because they are no longer able to ambulate on their own. The lack of mobility and confidence to perform daily activities causes major muscle deterioration, as well as depression.

At Lexington Podiatry, we have always tried to get to the root of the problem in hopes of reversing nerve damage, not just covering it up with these harsh and debilitating medications. Our goal is to not only calm active and painful nerves, but to generate new neural growth. We have successfully been treating and cultivating protocols that work for over 15 years..

Success Story

This past week we had a patient who suffered a stroke 3 years ago leaving his wife with drop foot (inability to lift your toes, creating a huge risk of falling). She and her husband are active in the horse industry and frequently work on their farm. Her husband started tearing up as he shared his wife’s daily activity after undergoing 9 laser treatments in 3 weeks. He said for the first time in 3 years, she no longer reached for his hand to help her walk on the uneven terrain on their farmland.

She then expressed and proceeded to show me how she has gained the ability to pull her toes upward…in 3 weeks! She was unable to do it before her laser therapy.

While her husband was initially sad that she no longer needed his help to walk, he immediately had the biggest smile on his face as he saw how much happier his wife was. Of course, the wife is also extremely happy to go shoe shopping! She doesn’t have to wear solely orthopedic shoes anymore!

If you have been running from one doctor to another and trying multiple treatments for any issues you may be having, it might just be time to try out laser therapy. If you're ready to learn more about how laser therapy works and what makes it so effective, keep reading!

When someone mentions lasers, the first thing that may come to mind is a sci-fi movie. From treating acute and chronic nerve pain– laser therapy really has become quite versatile over its lifetime of usage (it’s been in use for decades!). And if you have any questions about it being safe, rest assured as this type of therapy has been studied extensively by medical professionals and is highly recommended by them too! Let's look at some of the ways these amazing lasers are being used today!

Acute nerve pain

  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Work-related injury (we encourage you to work with your workman’s compensation representative and our Patient Experience Team prior to your appointment)
  • Post-surgical procedure-nerve impingement, reduction of scar tissue affecting nerves (must see a provider first)
  • Neuropathy
  • Neuromas

Chronic pain

  • Burning/tingling/numbness
  • Neuropathy
  • Drop foot after a stroke
  • Difficulty walking, or fear of failing or history of falling
  • Radiculopathy (sciatica, back or hip pain that causes pain in feet)

Should I see a doctor at Lexington Podiatry first?

Nerve damage is a fickle beast. It is highly complex and to make sure you are an appropriate candidate for laser therapy to resolve your nerve pain, we encourage you to schedule a visit with our providers. At this visit, they will fully evaluate your painful nerve condition and create a custom treatment plan. This will best guide you through a successful laser therapy protocol for those with chronic pain symptoms, giving you the best possible outcome. If you already have a test confirming your neuropathy and have no other contributing nerve damage (ie, radiculopathy-back pain that causes nerve damage in feet) we encourage you to schedule directly with our experienced Laser Clinician..

Is it FDA cleared?

Yes, it is FDA cleared for treatment of chronic pain. However, MLS therapy has been used by wealthy patients and celebrities for decades. Contrary to popular belief, laser therapy is not just for the elite.

At our modern Podiatry clinic, we have offered laser therapy for the past 15 years. During this time, we have created successful protocols for our patients to generate new nerve growth which allows patients to get back to work and daily activities.

FDA has cleared this advanced technology and it’s backed up with plenty of evidence proving its effectiveness, this life-saving light source aims to reduce swelling, inflammation, and overall pain from a variety of conditions. Its revolutionary wavelength technology allows practitioners to direct deeper treatments within our bodies - something other attempted therapies couldn’t do before. By penetrating damaged cells, it stimulates enzyme production while increasing cell repair rate. This effectively eradicates scarring on the nerve. So don’t suffer through another restless night any longer – MLS Laser Therapy has got you covered!

Laser Therapy

How does laser therapy reduce the pain from my nerve damage and improve my quality of life?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, painless treatment that uses energy in two specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions. The energy from this light stimulates activity in damaged cells and speeds the process in which they can recover. MLS Laser Therapy treatments have been clinically shown to significantly reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling while it improves local blood circulation and helps to repair injury and increase mobility. Listed below are more specifics on this process.

  1. Increased Blood Flow which promotes faster healing

Laser therapy is an effective way to increase blood flow to your legs and feet, allowing them to heal and perform better than ever before. This treatment can also reduce pain due to poor circulation and provide other long-term benefits – all with minimal effort! The laser works by generating low-level lig ht energy that penetrates the skin, stimulating increased blood flow to the affected area. Not only does this promote the growth of new, healthy nerves, but it also reduces inflammation and increases nerve activity in those damaged nerves.

The special wavelengths of light emitted by the laser help trigger vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and activate your lymphatic drainage system, which removes excess fluid from the damaged area. This process helps to reduce any edema or buildup of fluid and minimizes any bruising or inflammation, leading you back to feeling as good as new!

  2. Reduction of Swelling and inflammation, decreasing your pain

Maintaining healthy circulation is essential for keeping your body in tip-top shape, and it’s especially important if you're looking to reduce swelling and inflammation. That's where MLS laser therapy comes into play. This type of laser therapy helps to reduce swelling by using specific light frequencies that penetrate deep into the tissues, thus boosting blood flow and helping to break up any excess fluid buildup in the area. In turn, this can help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with neural damage! Plus, it's fast – so you'll be feeling better before you know it.

  3. Pain relief

MLS laser therapy is a great way to help manage pain and improve nerve function. It works by promoting your body's natural healing factors. Not only does it provide relief from pain, but the improvements in tissue health and nerve performance can lead to longer-term pain reduction and improved functioning.

We've all heard about endorphins and enkephalin, the pain-killing chemicals that our bodies naturally produce. But did you know that laser therapy can help kick your body's production of these powerful natural pain relievers into overdrive? Yes, it's true! Through its effect on nerve cells, MLS Laser Therapy helps reduce nerve sensitivity and allows your body to ramp up its production of endorphins and enkephalin. So not only will you benefit from reduced inflammation and swelling when using laser therapy, but you may also find yourself enjoying an extra boost of those feel-good hormones too!

Nerd Alert: Next on the list is power density, or how much energy we're delivering in a specific area. This is measured in watts per square centimeter and helps us control the intensity of the laser's effect. It can be adjusted depending on the size of the area you're treating, or even just to make sure you don't overdo it!

Finally, there are pulses—or bursts of energy emitted at regular intervals. The number of pulses and their frequency (measured in Hertz) can also be changed up to achieve different results. So, by tweaking these four variables—energy, impulse duration, power density and pulses—you have complete control over your laser treatments!

By using a MLS IV laser over the injured area (or nerve) site, we’re able flip your body’s switch to promote an immense amount of blood flow. This rush of blood circulation (which carries your natural anti-inflammatory fighters) is directed to the damaged nerve. By promoting your natural healing factors to the area, you have expedited healing and you’re able to get back to living your life, quicker!

It’s quick (~10 minutes per leg) and painless (not only is it painless, but it also actually feels good to get circulation to the damaged area.

I’ve tried laser therapy before and it didn’t work, how is this different?

Much like cars, all lasers aren’t built the same. Over the years, our doctors have hand-selected, tested, and measured the efficacy of only the most effective lasers.

During the past 15 years, we’ve been able to have hands-on experience and listen to our patient’s feedback. We’ve tested and measured success rates of other alternative lasers and therapy protocols.

After conducting research for over 15 years, and measuring success rates with our patients, we can confidently recommend our lasers and treatment plans. In fact, we’re already been treating our Lexington Podiatry patients, we’re just now offering it to the public!.

Does it really work?

MLS laser therapy is a powerful tool in the treatment of chronic neuropathy and acute nerve damage from injuries or surgery. Chronic pain sufferers need ~9 treatments to gauge efficacy to best determine how their body is going to respond to laser therapy.

When it comes to relieving pain, MLS laser therapy is a great choice. It has an impressive 70-90% efficacy rate, meaning that you're more likely than not to get relief from your pain! Best of all, it's non-painful and FDA-cleared so you can be sure that it's safe. What's even better is that this treatment doesn't require surgery; no need to worry about additional pain or recovery time. That means you can be on the road to feeling better sooner rather than later - without breaking the bank.

All our patients have some level of improvement. Chronic pain can be challenging to predict, however we’re confident that you will have (at minimum), some type of pain relief. None of our patients over 15 years have ever had a negative reaction (increase in pain).

Using light energy to reduce inflammation, our team of experts uses this technology to help promote healing and reduce swelling. In addition to providing relief from pain, this laser therapy also helps improve blood circulation which further aids in the recovery process. Our specialists are dedicated to finding the best solution for each individual patient so they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

How do I know if it’s really working?

After the first visit, most patients don’t experience a drastic drop in pain. To promote blood flow on a consistent basis we recommend 2-3 treatments weekly for the first 4-5 weeks. After the first week, you shouldn’t feel much difference. The nerve requires time to respond to the new influx of circulation.

This pain continues to reduce the more laser visits have been completed. Most patients experience a drop in pain by ~70% in 3-4 weeks with 9 treatments.

During the session you will feel a warming sensation which is quite pleasant. It is completely pain-free. Sit back and relax as the gentle flow of circulation courses to your damaged nerves knowing healing is occurring beneath the surface.

How do you diagnose and make sure that my burning/tingling/numbness is neuropathy and not something else?

Unlike most Podiatry offices, we also offer the appropriate testing in our office. Why do you ask? Because we literally treat it all day, every day we decided to make this portion of your comprehensive workup convenient for you, saving you the time and hassle of dealing with hospitals and other facilities.

We have partnered with the world-known, Dr. Mark E. Brooks, PT, DSc, ECS, OCS. Hailing from Richmond, KY, he’s Board Certified in Electroneuromyography and Orthopedics, specializing in Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity (EMG/NCV) tests.

Dr. Brooks will deliver same day preliminary results and reports, which means we are able to put the power of your treatment plan in your hands right away.

We’re very fortunate to offer this specialty testing at Lexington Podiatry. He has been performing this highly specific studies in our office for over a decade. A bit of bragging here…he frequently travels to train and educate other colleagues in his field. He is the top expert in his field on nerve damage, specifically lower extremity, although he is well versed in upper extremity neurological issues as well. His services are generally covered by insurance and as a courtesy, we will verify with your insurance before your coveted appointment with him.

After your visit with Dr. Brooks, you will then be quickly ushered into your private and relaxing exam room where you will then review the results with your provider at Lexington Podiatry.

How does laser therapy treat my neuropathy?

We strive to give our patients relief from their symptoms with effective treatment and management plans that allow them to get back to living the life they want.

Laser therapy is a great way to treat peripheral neuropathy and its associated symptoms. It can help improve blood flow to the area, reduce inflammation, and even relieve nerve compression. This makes it an incredibly effective treatment for those suffering from this debilitating condition.

One of the primary benefits of laser therapy is that it improves the circulation of blood in the affected area. This helps bring much-needed oxygen and other essential nutrients that damaged nerves need to perform better – which can lead to better overall functionality and reduced pain. Additionally, laser therapy also reduces inflammation which may be causing some of your discomfort. And finally, this type of treatment can help reduce nerve compression as well as provide relief from any associated symptoms such as tingling, numbness, and pain.

How many laser treatments will I need?

Most patients need 9-12 treatments total to achieve optimal nerve health. We usually offer these twice or three times a week over the course of a few weeks. The treatment is painless, so you can relax as you receive your care.

So if you’re looking for a non-invasive means of managing peripheral neuropathy, laser therapy might be the right option for you. With its many benefits and fast results, it could give you the relief you need to start living your life again!

Laser therapy has become an increasingly popular treatment for peripheral neuropathy due to its numerous benefits and fast results. It helps improve blood flow to the area which brings much-needed oxygen and other essential nutrients.

If you’re feeling a pins-and-needles kind of pain in your feet and legs, don't hesitate - those could be symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The sooner we treat it, the better chance you have at avoiding worse problems down the line! That's why MLS laser therapy is such an important option to consider. Our providers will create, with your help, a customized treatment plan using MLS laser therapy and modern treatments protocols to reduce your symptoms within weeks.

Will my pain return?

This is directly dependent upon the root of your pain. If it is chronic in nature and stemming from a systemic issue, such as low vitamin levels or chronic back pain causing radiculopathy, it can return. But this is entirely dependent on you. We perform all extensive and necessary testing to best diagnose where the source of your pain is coming from. We also work with your family doctor (or specialist if you prefer) to collaborate and build a team around you during your treatment. Our recommendation is to work with your provider to address the causative factors to prevent re-occurrence. However, if you’ve already exhausted treatment options, then you’ll need maintenance treatments which are based on your individual condition.

Are there any side effects of laser therapy?

There are no risks or side effects with the MLS laser. No need to worry about an infection after a surgical procedure or taking harsh oral medication. You get pain-relief and healing without the consequences of risks.

Why should I choose laser therapy over an oral prescription from my doctor?

Laser therapy is SAFE for you!

Expect During Your Visit

What to expect during your visit

Wear comfortable clothing as it may be easily moved to direct the laser wand more effectively over the injured area. Pulsing the laser or using selected wavelengths helps minimize heat on the skin, which reduces the risk of side effects. One session of laser therapy typically lasts ~10 minutes, based on the number of areas treated. The treatment is almost always painless, though you may feel warmth or tingling during the treatment. Typically, the warmth feels good to injured areas!

MLS Laser Therapy is a great solution for those looking to enjoy the benefits of treatment without feeling any pain. Most patients don't experience anything more than warmth in the treated area, so you can rest easy knowing there won't be any unpleasant sensations during your appointment. After the MLS Laser Therapy is complete no bandaging or further treatments are necessary; all that's left to do is enjoy the cumulative results of your session! So relax and let us take care of you – we'll monitor your progress throughout your treatment cycle and make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. It may not happen overnight, but we're confident you'll see impressive results shortly.

I have white coat syndrome!

Expect a spa-like experience where you’re relaxed from the moment you step through our office doors. Greeted by friendly smiles and a calming Kentucky accent, you’ll feel at ease with our top-rated staff.

Additionally, at our office, we offer a “Comfort Menu”. If you’re a little nervous about this painless procedure, that’s quite normal. We have a wide variety of stress-reducing items available to make you more relaxed. Ask for our warm, lavender-infused neck pillow, or perhaps a weighted blanket would put you at ease. Don’t forget to stop at our full beverage and snack area for a hot chamomile tea as soon as you arrive. Within a few minutes you’ll be whisked away to your private relaxing suite with our experienced Laser Clinician.

Who is NOT a candidate?

  • Patients with active cancer.
  • Those who are pregnant.
  • Those who have a dark pigmented lesion underneath the nail (this requires a doctor visit first for proper evaluation).

What can I expect after treatment? Do I have to stay off of my feet?

After your treatment session you can resume your normal activity without restrictions. Head to the pool for some mobility training, or maybe drop by the grocery store to grab some essentials. There are no restrictions or limitations. After the first visit, most patients don’t experience a drastic drop in pain. To promote blood flow on a consistent basis we recommend 2-3 treatments weekly for the first 3-5 weeks. After the first week, you shouldn’t feel much difference. The nerve requires time to respond to the new influx of circulation.

Who must see a provider before laser therapy can be started

Those who have a dark pigmented lesion underneath the nail.

Those diagnosed with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, or arterial disease, post-surgical patients.

The above underlying conditions require a pre-screen to take additional precautions to ensure the best possible outcome. (You may use your insurance for any doctor visit)

Is this covered by my insurance?

While the MLS Therapy Laser is FDA-cleared, treatments aren’t covered by insurance. If you have FSA, Health Savings Accounts (FSA) or a Medical IRA the cost can be covered. We do encourage you to coordinate directly with your insurance company for approval prior to your appointment. This will allow our Patient Experience Team to potentially get prior approval and allow your visit to go seamlessly. With rising appointment fees and out of pocket co-pays, the cost of the laser therapy treatments is actually less costly than other, more invasive treatments that are “covered” by insurance.

Is it safe while you are nursing?

YES!
