There are many reasons why a skin/nail biopsy would need to be done. From diagnoses such as dermatitis, rash, fungus, possible cancerous lesions. These tests are simple and range from a punch biopsy to a partial nail removal.
A skin biopsy will be performed in office under local anesthesia. Once the area is prepped, we will take a sample using a 3mm punch. Since the biopsy site is so small, no stitches are required. You will be sent home with a collagen base wound healer and given instructions for daily dressing changes. This is to be done until the area is completely healed in approximately 2-3 weeks.
A nail biopsy will also be performed in our office under local anesthesia. It doesn’t take long to remove the nail. Once the nail is removed, we will bandage your toe and place you in a post-op shoe for the next few days. This will prevent pressure in shoes from causing discomfort. You will be sent home with a collagen based wound healer and instructions for soaking and dressing changes. This will be done daily until the area is completely healed in approximately 3-4 weeks.
Both of these procedures require no down time. The patient can walk right out of the office and go back to work. You will have a follow-up appointment with your physician in 2-3 weeks to review the biopsy results and the next steps in your treatment plan.
